Bar Monastery

17 Blossom Street, York, North Yorkshire YO24 1AQ, United Kingdom

Description:

A significant attraction of York is the Bar Monastery, located in the heart of the city. It is the oldest convent of women, founded in 1676 and still operating today.

The main building of the monastery is built in Victorian style and consists of three floors and an attic. The chapel is built in an elegant neoclassical style. It is a domed rotunda with nave and transepts. The dome is crowned with sculptural garlands of various fruits and leaves.

In 1987, a small museum was opened here, which presents unique artifacts, documents and household items of nuns. Its purpose is to preserve the Christian history of York. The unique library, which includes ancient manuscripts and archives, is open to the public.

Currently, a souvenir shop, a small hotel and a conference room for business meetings are also available to visitors. In the excellent cafe you can chat with friends, enjoying delicious dishes of traditional British cuisine.

Bar Monastery is immersed in the greenery of a picturesque garden with an interesting landscape design, so it is great for weddings and other solemn events.
