Mansion House
Saint Helens Square, York YO1 9QL, United Kingdom
Description:
One of York’s historic treasures is the Mansion House, the residence of the city’s mayors during their tenure. This colorful city-house was built in 1725, and has a magnificent facade with pilasters and an elegant interior.
Mansion House is considered one of the architectural masterpieces of Yore. There is an extensive collection of civil regalia, artifacts, silver, antique furniture and paintings. The collection includes a large sword of York, which belonged to the Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund in the XV century.
Although the mansion house is not an ordinary museum, you can get here with special themed tours twice a week. These fascinating excursions are connected with the long history of the building, as well as the history of the Lord Mayors and Sheriffs who lived and worked here.
