Bootham Bar Gate
65 Monkgate, York, North Yorkshire YO31 7PA, UK
Description:
Bootham Bar is one of the four gates to the famous Roman fortress of York. Having defended the fortress for more than 2,000 years, it is now part of the history of York.
The current structure of the gate and fortress is not Roman, but it has been for quite some time. Boothham Bar, unlike other gates, dates from the XI century, and the rest, for the most part, from the XIV.
During the Siege of York in 1644, a significant part of the gate was badly damaged, and in some places irretrievably destroyed. The series of destruction ends in 1835, when Boothham Bar is the last of the gates to be stripped of a barbican.
Nevertheless, despite all the destruction and rebuilding, Butham Bar still welcomes tourists and visitors from all over the world.
