Danube bend
Description:
An excursion to the bend of the Danube is an opportunity to plunge into the atmosphere of the country of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, because these small cities are less affected by the modern rhythm of life.
The old streets of Szentendre, founded five centuries ago by craftsmen Serbs and Greeks, are still calm. To this day, many artists and craftsmen live here, inspired by its peaceful atmosphere. Visit the Marzipan Museum, with the most intricate compositions from the sweet marzipan mass, here you will see even the layout of the Parliament. Numerous souvenir shops and art galleries will replenish the stock of original Hungarian souvenirs.
Well, how not to sit down for a well-deserved rest in any of the restaurants, cafes or pastry shops, because it is impossible to resist the aromas. 25 km from Sentendre is the picturesque town of Vysegrad, where in the Middle Ages a fortress and a palace were built and where the royal court moved. Under King Matthias Corvinus in the 15th century, the palace acquired a Renaissance look with 350 rooms and was considered one of the most beautiful buildings of its time.
Unfortunately, both buildings were destroyed by the Habsburgs in the 18th century and were only partially restored in the last century, but nevertheless a visit to them gives an opportunity to feel the spirit and grandeur of the time. From the top of the fortress mountain offers a wonderful view of the Danube valley.
Another 25 km upstream of the Danube is the ancient capital of Hungary, Esztergom. The royal fortress, which later became the palace of the archbishop, today serves as the Fortress Museum. Special feelings cover the visitor when he is among the ancient walls, which in the X century began to build Prince Geza, and in which his son, the founder of the Hungarian state, King Istvan the Holy (975-1038), who created here an episcopate and after that the city for 250 years was the residence of Hungarian kings. The majestic Esztergom Basilica, rebuilt in the mid-19th century, is the main and largest cathedral of the country, and since 1715 the Archbishop of Esztergom is also the first bishop of Hungary.
From the observation deck behind the temple, from the high bank, there is a beautiful view of Slovakia, which lies on the other side of the Danube. There is also a bridge connecting 2 countries. The tour takes almost all day, but can be changed according to your wishes.
