Mount Janos

Já noshegy, Budapest, Hungary

Description:

Mount Janos (or as it is also called Mount Gadam, Hungarian Mountain) is located in the city of Budapest, Hungary, northeast of the center of the capital. The name of the mountain consists of two parts: the ancient Germanic Janoza and the Hungarian Gadam. According to legend, the name Janos comes from the name of one of the famous statesmen of Hungary Janos Kadar (Janos Karadar). In ancient times, the mountain was called Mis (Mis udel), Gandal, Gyana (Gyanna). The height of Mount Janos above sea level is 1365 meters, and its total area is about 15 hectares.

The ravine, located on the top of the mountain, has a length of about a kilometer and a width of 25 to 50 meters. It was formed as a result of strong landslides after a powerful earthquake that occurred in 1851. This led to the formation of cracks in the mountain, which formed a gorge. The slopes of Mount Janos are covered with forest, mainly spruce and pine trees, which are covered with snow during winter. To the south, Mount Janos borders the small town of Miskolc. To the north of it is the resort of Balatonfüred. It is here that the famous thermal resort is located, where you can use the sources of thermal mineral water.

In total there are about 200 sources. The most famous of them is the source "Szimlet", which gained its fame due to the healing properties of thermal water.
