Memorial to Holocaust Victims
The Great Synagogue, Dohany 1077 Budapest, Hungary
Description:
The monument to the victims of the Holocaust is located in the courtyard of the Great Synagogue of Budapest and is an unusual solution of the architect - a weeping willow made of metal.
The leaves of the memorial tree bear the names of some of the 600,000 Jews who died during the Holocaust in Hungary. The ringing of the leaves as the wind blows reminds humanity of one of the most terrible periods of its history.
The idea of the monument belongs to the sculptor Imre Varga. It was installed in 1990 in the Memorial Park of Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish diplomat who, by sacrificing his position and life, saved the lives of thousands of Hungarian Jews during the Holocaust in the courtyard of Budapest’s Great Synagogue.
