Cave Church in Gellert Hill
Vegria, Budapest, Cave Church in Gellert Hill
Description:
The mysterious cave church located in the hill Gellert is a famous landmark, shrouded in a mystical halo. It is known that since ancient times it served as a shelter for wanderers and hermits. There are many legends about the cave. According to one of them in the Middle Ages, it became a home for a hermit named Istvan. It was he who discovered the spring with thermal water, which today flows directly into the Gellert bath. With this water, Istvan healed people, for which he was later canonized.
The history of the cave church begins in 1924 after the famous pilgrimage of Pauline monks. They built a church in the cave, which became one of the main attractions of modern Budapest.
Today, the cave church is a historical museum that anyone can visit. Getting to it is easy: just drive to the metro station Szent Gellert ter, next to which this place is located.
