Museum of Terror
Hungary, Budapest, Andrassy St., 60.
About the company:
The Museum of Terror, located on Andrassy Avenue in Budapest, is located in the building of the former State Security Office of Hungary and is dedicated to the tragic periods of the totalitarian history of Hungary.
Its opening took place in February 2002, the director was Maria Schmidt.
During the renovation work, the building was completely restored inside and outside. The interior design, the design of all expositions, as well as the exterior facade is the work of the architect Attila Kovacs.
During the reconstruction, the building was turned into a monument - the museum was limited to a black frame (decorative entablature, blade walls and granite pavement), which distinguished it among the buildings along Andrassi Street and emphasized its historical significance.
In the atrium of the museum is a Soviet tank and a huge wall with portraits of the victims of this building. Modern high-tech exhibitions are designed for Hungarians, but the English-language audio guide also helps to get a strong impression of visiting the museum. In each room there are brochures in English.
The museum houses many memorable exhibitions, such as a room about life in the Gulag, art and propaganda of socialist realism, a maze of bricks made of lard, reminiscent of the hard 1950s (bread with lard for lunch).
The last two rooms with color video show the festivities in 1991, when Soviet troops were withdrawn from the country. These videos show the reburial of Imre Nagy, the Pope's vizier, as well as walls with the names of members of the fascist organization and the secret police.
