Antiquity and Early Middle Ages: The territory of Eger was inhabited during the time of the Celts and Romans. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Avars and Slavic tribes lived here. At the beginning of the 11th century, the first king of Hungary, St. Stephen, founded an episcopal residence in Eger. The city became an important center of the Catholic Church.
Eger fortress and Tatar-Mongol invasion: In the 13th century, the construction of the famous Eger fortress began, which later became the symbol of the city. In 1241-1242, during the Mongol invasion, the city suffered greatly, but was restored and fortified.
Heyday in the 15th-16th centuries: In the 15th century, Eger became the cultural and religious center of Hungary. Monasteries, schools, cathedrals are built here. In 1552, the city went down in history: a small garrison under the command of Istvan Dobo successfully repulsed the siege of the huge Turkish army. This heroic defense made Eger a symbol of Hungarian independence.
Ottoman period (1596–1687): Despite the feat of the defenders, a few decades later the Turks again besieged Eger and in 1596 conquered the city. For almost 100 years Eger became part of the Ottoman Empire. The Turks left a noticeable mark in architecture: the minaret tower is still preserved in the city - one of the northernmost in Europe.
Liberation and Baroque flourishing: In 1687, Eger was liberated from the Turks by Austrian troops. In the 18th century, the “golden age” of the city began: Baroque palaces, churches, monasteries were built, Eger became an important cultural center. Schools and a university were founded, and winemaking was developing.
19th and 20th centuries: Eger becomes famous throughout Europe for his wine "Bull blood" (Egri Bikavér), which is gaining international fame. The city is actively developing, theaters, museums, baths are being built. In the 20th century, Eger retained the status of a cultural jewel of Hungary, having managed to combine a rich historical heritage and modern life.
Eger today: Today Eger is one of the most popular tourist cities in Hungary. Tourists are attracted by the Eger fortress, minaret, basilica, thermal springs and wine cellars of the Valley of Beauty.
