Eger

Minorite church

Dobó Istvá n t r 4., 3300 Eger, Magyarorszá g

Description:

The Minorite Church is located in the central square of Eger. The building was built in the XVIII century for the Franciscan order, who settled in the town after the liberation of Hungary from the yoke of the Turks.

This church is a fine example of the Baroque style in Eastern Europe. It has an interesting facade: not flat, as is usually the case with churches, but convex. This decision belongs to the creator of the project - Kilian Ignaz Dinzenhofer.

The church is decorated with two high bell towers. Inside, the church is admired for its decoration. The interior decoration continued for another fifteen years after the construction was completed. The ceiling frescoes depicting events from the life of St. Anthony attract attention. Their author is Johann Kraker, who moved to Eger from Vienna. The artist is buried in the crypt of a Minorite church.

You can get to Eger from Budapest by Budapest-Eger train, which departs from the Budapest-Keleti station.
