Kamakura

Kamakura, the Samurai Capital of Japan

Description:

Kamakura holds a special place in Japanese history. At the end of the XII century, this city became the first capital of the samurai state and the center of a new type of power - Shogun rule. It was here that the foundations of samurai culture and political system were formed, which determined the development of the country for many centuries to come.

Over time, Kamakura lost the status of the capital, but did not lose its importance. The city has preserved its historical depth, religious heritage and special atmosphere. In later eras, it became a resort destination for the Tokyo nobility, which added to its restrained metropolitan character.

The tour covers key areas and monuments of Kamakura. Acquaintance with the city begins with the Zen temple of Hokoku-ji, known for its bamboo grove, stone garden and atmosphere of seclusion. In the vicinity of the temple there are preserved sites associated with the samurai aristocracy and the history of the city.

One of the central points of the route is Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu, the main Shinto temple of Kamakura and the symbolic center of the Kamakura shogunate. The temple is dedicated to Hachiman, the patron saint of warriors, and its history is closely tied to the rise and fall of the ruling Minamoto clan. The territory of the temple and the surrounding landscapes allow you to visualize the scale and significance of this place.

After the historical part of the route, a walk along Komachi Street is provided - a busy pedestrian zone with shops, craft shops, cafes and restaurants. This is an opportunity to change the rhythm and get acquainted with the everyday urban life of Kamakura.

Further, the route includes a visit to the Zeni Arai Benten temple, known for the custom of washing money, as well as the Big Buddha Kamakura (Daibutsu) in the Kotoku-in temple. This bronze statue with a height of more than 11 meters is located in the open air and is one of the most recognizable sights of the region.

The final point is the Hasedar temple, famous for its gardens and an observation deck with views of the city and the coast. If desired, the tour can be supplemented by a walk by the sea or a trip along the coast.

The tour takes place in an individual format, with a flexible route and a calm rhythm. Suitable for first acquaintance with Kamakura and understanding of the samurai era in Japanese history.
