The pompous Goeido Gate of Higashi Hongang-ji Temple is the first traditional structure seen by visitors to Kyoto. This temple belongs to the sect of Jodo Shin-su-Truly Pure Land, the founder of Shinran. The sect is popular among the common people, since it does not require lavish ritualism and esoteric knowledge, like the old sects.
- As opposed to Hongang-ji, To-ji Temple. Founded by a major religious figure Kukai, it belongs to the isoteric sect Shingon (The True Right Word). The five-tiered temple pagoda is the highest in Japan.
If some castles of Japan are known for their fortifications, Nijo became famous for unusually complex interiors and so-called "nightingale" floors. The complex was created by Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu.
- Gosho is the Imperial Palace. During its existence, it was repeatedly destroyed during fires, but invariably restored. Gosho remained the palace of the Japanese emperors until 122 Emperor Meiji moved with his court to Tokyo.
The word Shinto literally means “the way of the gods.” It's an ancient Japanese belief. Shinto originated in ancient Japan as a worship of the nature and souls of deceased ancestors. It is in the Shinto sanctuary of Fushimi Inari, dedicated to the god of rice fertility, that the tour ends.
