The Church of St. Astvatsatsin Akhtaly (St. Theotokos) was the largest Orthodox monastery in Northern Armenia; in the 12th and 13th centuries it served as a spiritual, educational and cultural center. Armenian and Georgian chronicles were studied in the institution. The territory of the monastery is surrounded by 10th century protective walls with towers, built during the reign of Bagratuni Karikyans; the walls extend from north to south along the entire perimeter of the square. Departure to Ozun. Visit the Ozun Monastery. The Odzun Church, like other monuments of the same type, has three entrances, the main of which, due to the composition, role and expediency of the approach, is the western one. On the walls of the church, in particular, around the openings and on the dome-bearing pylons, there are relief and ornamental images executed with great skill, in the style and performance of which the elegance and plasticity of the 6th-7th centuries are felt. The church is built of purely hewn stones of local light brown felsite. There is no reliable information about the time of construction. According to the architectural composition, decorative decoration and other data in contact with the chronology, it is considered probable construction of the church in the late 6th century.
