How to travel and earn money at the same time? Top of the best ways
Have you ever wondered, “How can I make money while traveling?” or “How will I survive on the road?” or maybe “How can I not start traveling if I have little money?”
Chances are, these are the thoughts that really crossed your mind (at some point, they all crossed our minds!), and chances are you haven’t found any answers.
As a result, you haven’t taken the first step and started traveling yet, and over time you start to wonder if you’ll ever achieve your travel goals.
Are you ready? Here are the top ways to make money while traveling (be aware that this is only a small part of the real opportunities!)
Teach English: There are job opportunities all over the world, and in many cases you don’t need to get certified. You just need to be a native speaker. Visit eslcafe.com or TEFL Academy, submit a few applications to schools in South Korea, Japan, Thailand or dozens of other places, and you’ll be surprised how many interview invitations you’ll get.
Sell timeshares. If you were born to be a salesman, head to Greece, Thailand, Mexico, the Caribbean or any other major resort area and you will be able to find a job selling timeshares. These resorts need vendors who can find common ground with their potential customers, so they prefer Americans to sell to Americans, Italians to sell to Italians, and so on. The earning potential in this area is enormous.
Work at the resort. If you do not like the sale, resorts around the world often hire staff from other countries in various positions, for example, at the reception, in a restaurant or in the entertainment / entertainment department.
Dorm work. Hostels are often looking for new employees who are willing to work a few hours each day either at the front desk, cleaning, or perhaps both, in exchange for a free bed each night. Not a bad way to save money.
Freelance online work. Whether you have experience or interest in web design, programming, illustration, writing, marketing, consulting, legal work, designing, or you can do any kind of administrative work, you should definitely take a look at platforms that connect freelancers with people and companies who need work. Even if you have some other experience, still look: freelance work can be found in dozens of different fields.
Work visas for vacation. Countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, France, Ireland and Singapore offer them to foreigners, typically those between the ages of 18 and 30. If you are in this age range, a work holiday visa may just be the best option for making money and traveling. It allows you to stay in the country for up to one year, and in some cases, apply and work for any position you want. Yes, it is a bargain and a great way to earn income while abroad.
Fruit picking. Go out in the sun, grab a basket and start picking fruit. This option is quite common for travelers/travelers passing through Australia, and payment may include paying per kilogram of fruit you harvest, accommodation, meals, or any combination of the three.
Keeping a travel blog. Making a lot of money with a travel blog is not easy. The amount of time and effort required to do this is far greater than most people realize. But if you’re looking for extra money to fund some of your travels while keeping the world up to date on your adventures, starting a travel blog might be your answer.
Online work. Any kind of blogging. "" You don't have to start a travel blog just because you're traveling. Whatever your interests, you might want to start this blog. There is always an opportunity to make some money, no matter what you decide to focus on.
Affiliate marketing. Making money in this way is definitely possible, despite the high competition. But if you're willing to devote a couple of months to research, you'll find your niche and hopefully a steady salary.
Selling goods over the Internet. Have you found an interesting product that you think will interest others? Do you have your own handmade product that you want to sell? You can set up a website or store on eBay or any other online store and start selling. Your success will depend on many factors, but again, if you want to learn how to offer your products to the right people online, even a few sales a week can potentially keep you on track.
Housekeeping. Who wouldn’t want a free place to live? While you won’t usually get paid, if you don’t mind looking after someone’s house while it’s gone, it’s a great option. I know a lot of people who just move from housekeeping work to housekeeping work, essentially avoiding living expenses for years.
Work remotely. There is no rule that you have to quit your current job to travel. Perhaps your position allows you to work remotely and all you need to do is talk to your boss to make changes. Go to a place like Playa del Carmen in Mexico and you will find foreigners everywhere who do just that, can make money and travel wherever they want.
Haircuts. Choose a popular hostel, hang up a sign (ask first!), charge a reasonable amount and go ahead. I remember meeting a traveler who was doing this in Zagreb, Croatia, and she was earning $40 a day by placing ads at three hostels. She cut her hair for a month, then traveled for a month and repeated. Not bad at all.
Massage. Follow the same idea as above, but offer a massage instead! I would definitely sign up after a long day wandering around town or town.
Bartenders. Many cities have bars that pay cash travelers who can work in a bar and are willing to stay in one place for a while. Bars associated with hostels are often the best choice.
Work in a cafe/restaurant. The same goes for cafes and restaurants. If you are in a popular hiking destination, just ask the hostel staff if they know of any cafes that hire travelers. Sometimes you can also find a local magazine with ads/coupons, focused on travelers, lying around the hostel. Open it and you’ll see many times restaurants adverts for help.
Website design. Do you know how to build simple or even more complex websites? Start your own business and look for customers online, through family and friends, or even overseas. Staying in a hostel in Turkey with a crappy website? Tell them you’ll improve their website for $200.
Learn to play musical instruments – piano? Guitar? Flute? Glockenspiel? No matter what you play, there are probably people all over the world who want to learn. Place ads in local online ads or place signage in busy places, such as college gathering places, and you may already have several classes lined up before you notice it.
Teach any language. English is not the only language that people want to learn. Do you speak French, Spanish, German, Italian, Chinese, Arabic or anything else? Look for a job or organize your own classes by placing ads at universities or popular hangouts like cafes.
Teaching dance. Again, hang signs around town, find a place in a public park, and teach others how to dance tango. You can also make a deal with a restaurant/bar where they will pay you to run classes with them because it will bring them a lot of extra business.
Teach yoga. You can do the same as above with yoga or any kind of exercise.
Construction work. If you have construction experience or can fake it, this is one industry that tends to hire people for short-term jobs by paying them "under the table." As a result, it’s a great option for travelers looking to make money quickly.
Rent your things. You may not have a luxury car to rent out, but these days you can find websites that allow you to rent out everything you have. Wedding dresses and tuxedos, furniture, garden tools and so on.
A diving instructor. Do you have a certificate? If so, there are dozens of great scuba diving destinations around the world – Egypt, Mexico, Thailand, Australia, Hawaii – where you can find work. Talon at 1Dad1Kid.com did just that in Central America.
Tour escort. Many international tour operators hire escorts to accompany each group. The salary is low and you usually have to sign up for a 1-2-year contract, but the advantage is that you can explore parts of the world without spending any money at all, and at the same time get a great work experience.
Sell your art and crafts in local markets. Many places have markets where foreigners can rent a counter and sell their goods. These are usually markets focused on tourists and other travelers. As a result, there are many people who follow the market circle, moving from market to market all year round, selling their handicrafts, artwork, clothing from India or other goods in high demand.
Tour operators in the Caribbean. When I worked aboard cruise ships and we docked in places like Saint Thomas, Saint Martin or Cozumel, many of our local tour operators were from the US, Canada and Europe. Their job was to meet passengers disembarking from a ship, organize groups and escort them to a tourist bus, van or boat. The salary was good and they had to live and work in a tropical place for a while.
Writing articles about travel. If you are a decent writer, you have the opportunity to write about your experiences and the places you visit and then publish those articles on websites or online magazines. It’s not an easy business, but if you can publish a couple of articles and start proving yourself, your articles may soon become in demand.
The corporate world. You may want to live abroad, but want a decent career or are looking for a higher salary. Well, there is nothing stopping you from applying for a corporate or other long-term job worldwide. China has a growing number of opportunities for expats, Singapore and New Zealand are very popular, and some Middle Eastern countries are home to thousands of expats living and working there in companies.
Work on a cruise ship. I always recommend this option as a great way to make good money while getting to know the world, gaining solid work experience and interacting with hundreds of people (both crew members and passengers) from all over the world. Not a bad list of benefits.
Work on the yacht. You may find it difficult to turn down a job offer aboard a yacht or sailboat, especially one that will spend a few months in the Caribbean or the Mediterranean or perhaps even sail across the Pacific.
The travel/tourism industry. This doesn’t guarantee you’ll be on the road all the time, but working in the travel industry at home can be ideal for some. A stable salary, plenty of good networking opportunities, and if you find yourself in the right position, you just have to travel as part of your job. (Work in Travel is a great resource for anyone interested in working in the industry.)
Edit English signage/menu. It may sound silly, but there are travelers who make decent money wandering around tourist spots around the world and getting paid to correct English spelling/grammar on signage and business menus that try to attract foreigners.
Busking – Do you have any talent? You may not have the talent, but you’re more than willing to let people laugh at you, especially if they throw extra change in your hat. Many, many travelers play guitar, juggle, dance and sing as they travel the world. However, in some places it may be illegal, so be sure to read the rules.
Volunteer work. In most cases, it won’t pay off, but you’ll get an unforgettable cultural experience! And if you're directly communicating with local organizations and projects where you can make a real impact, that's even better. The excellent Worldpackers platform offers opportunities around the world where you can volunteer locally in exchange for free accommodation and meals.
Be creative! One of the best examples is a traveler I met in Central America who financed more than 6 months of travel using a very simple business model. She moved from a beach town to a beach town, contacted several local tour operators (who usually offered scuba diving and snorkeling tours), and then struck a deal. In exchange for doing business with them, she will get a good commission. Every day she went to hostels and cafés for travelers and recommended tour operators with whom she worked. Let's just say she was doing really well. So put on a thought cap, come up with a few ideas and don’t be afraid to get creative!
Hopefully, these options have helped you realize that it’s possible to make money and travel, that making money on the road isn’t as impossible as you once thought. If that were not possible, there would certainly not be so many people from all over the world traveling and working exploring our great planet.
