Ancient cities of Russia: Gorokhovets
The city was founded in 1168, and it was first mentioned in 1239 in the Laurentian chronicle, when it was attacked by the Tatar-Mongols and burned.
Gorokhovets is located on the right bank of the Klyazma River (Volga-Oka interfluve), 157 km east of the city of Vladimir, on the border with the Nizhny Novgorod region.
Why Gorokhovets? According to one of the interpretations, on the site of the modern city there was a tract Hora-khovets (grave mountain).
Another version: the name dates back to the times when Finno-Ugric tribes lived there, and in their dialect the word sounded "Khorrokhovsya", - in translation - "Sleeping in the snow village".
Gorokhovets is considered one of the oldest cities of the Vladimir region, since 1970 it has been included in the list of historical settlements in Russia.
Unique valuable monuments of church and civil architecture of different eras are preserved in the city itself and its surroundings: Znamensky, Nikolsky, Sretensky monasteries, Annunciation Cathedral; good stone houses of rich merchants Ershov, Kanonnikov, Oparin, Shiryaev. Mansions of the XIX and XX centuries, which belonged to famous surnames: Morozov, Sudoplatov, Prishletsov.
What is Gorokhovets known for?
Pea porridge "Puchalka" - knowledgeable people say that the most delicious and correct pea porridge is prepared in the city of Gorokhovets. This dish was served for winter Christmas and Lent, prepared for wedding and memorial ceremonies.
Cooked according to an old recipe, in a clay pot in the oven, - porridge will pleasantly surprise the most demanding gourmets.
Gorokhovets wooden toys - in the middle of the XIX century, the yakushi - local carpenters-virtuoso carved toys for the village children, they were also called "chipped", because they were from the waste of carpentry - chips and chips. Children of the XXI century will also enjoy orange-red horses, cockerels and birds with bright plumage.
