Ancient cities of Russia: Kasimov
Kasimov is a unique city and the same age as Moscow, during his history he managed to visit the center of the Kasimov Khanate, the border fortress of the Vladimir-Suzdal principality, the commercial city of the Ryazan province.
The distance from Kasimov to Ryazan is 165 km, to Moscow - 262 km.
It is believed that the city received its name in honor of the Tatar prince Kasim. The Grand Duke of Moscow and Vladimir Vasily II the Dark for his loyalty granted him Nizov Gorodets - so the Kasimov Khanate arose (existed from 1452 to 1681).
In the era of Ivan the Terrible there was a popular name of the city - "bell" because of the fact that local craftsmen were able to make the best bells in Russia. An interesting collection of these percussion musical and signaling instruments can be seen in the Kasimov Museum of Bells.

From an architectural point of view, Kasimov is divided into Russian and Muslim parts.
The first is the majestic Ascension Cathedral, the Annunciation Church, the Assumption Church. Cathedral Square, shopping malls.
On the embankment, along the Oka River, there are beautiful mansions and estates of city merchants, township owners, Kasimov shipowners and manufacturers, Zemstvo figures: Barkov, Shemyakin, Alyanchikov, Chernov, Shishkin, Verein, Skornyakov.
Barkov House at the beginning of the XIX century was considered the center of Kasimov’s social life, he hosted many invited meetings and solemn balls. The future Emperor Alexander II stayed in this mansion during his trip to Russia in 1837.
The Khan period in the history of the city is reminiscent of the Khan Mosque on the Tatar Mountain, (tombs) of Teki Afgan-Muhammed Sultan and Shah-Ali Khan.
Kasimov is known for samovars - in the city museum of samovars (there are two in Russia, the second opened in Tula) a unique collection dedicated to the ancient Russian life and traditions of the national tea party is collected: more than 400 samovars of various sizes and shapes. The exposition has trays, tea sets, candlesticks, mirrors, furniture of different eras and countries.
As a reminder from Kasimov, you can bring sweets: local chocolate, gingerbread and marmalade - products of the local confectionery factory "Loyalty to Quality" or souvenirs from the art salon of the Local History Museum: painted plates and boxes.
