Ancient cities of Russia: Murom
The Old Russian City Murom. It was founded in 862 and is mentioned in the Tale of Bygone Years.
Murom is located on the left bank of the Oka River, 137 km from Vladimir, on the border with the Nizhny Novgorod region.
It is most convenient to get to the city by car, bus or train (the nearest airport is in Nizhny Novgorod).
If we come to Murom by train, it arrives at the city railway station.
Interesting is the building of the station in the Art Nouveau style, which was built according to the project of architect Alexei Shchusev. Some elements are made as details of the design of the fortress of the Middle Ages.
The railway station building is an object of cultural heritage of the peoples of Russia of regional importance.
The first train on the Murom railway was held in 1880.
Ancient Murom streets, alleys, churches and expanses of the Oka River can be seen in the Soviet films “The Bride”, “There is no ford in the fire”, “Ascent” (the city was filmed by famous directors G. Panfilov, L. Shepitko, A. German-Self, A. Manasarova) and in modern films “The History of the Spring Call” (directed by R. Novikov), “The Man from the Boulevard of Capuchinok” (directed by A. The overlay chapel of Ilia Muromets
In Karacharovo, under the hill on which the Trinity Church rises, there is an overlay chapel of Ilya Muromets. This hexagonal, wooden chapel is also called Ilyinskaya, since the local places are considered the birthplace of the epic hero. It was built in 2007 over the spring, which was known to local residents for a long time.
This place has long been a chapel, standing on four wooden pillars, gradually collapsing, by the 1960s it became inactive. The new, rebuilt building of the chapel in the name of St. Ilya Muromets has one dome with a cross above the headboard. Inside, icons are installed on the walls, candles are lit.
Nikolo-Naberazhnaya Church
On the high bank of the Oka is the Nikolo-Naberezhnaya church, its gilded domes are visible from afar. Due to the fact that during the flooding of the river water reaches the walls of the church, it is also called “Nikola Wet”.
The stone temple was built at the very beginning of the XVIII century - on the site of a wooden structure. The temple was dedicated to the most revered saint in the city - Nicholas the Wonderworker, patronizing merchants and travelers. And since the Fisherman’s Sloboda was located next to the church, such patronage to the Muromites was especially necessary.
In architectural terms, the church is an example of the style of “Moscow Baroque”. The main relic of the temple is the relics of righteous Julian Lazarevskaya, transferred to the church in 1993.
Not far from the church you can see another attraction - the healing Nikolsky spring, next to which, according to legend, the saint himself appeared several times.
Temple of Cosmas and Damian (Cosmodemian Church)
White stone temple of the construction of “eight on four” with a tent dome.
According to one legend, the church was built where in 1552 there was a tent of Ivan the Terrible, going to Kazan. The king promised to build stone temples in Murom if the campaign was successful.
According to another legend, under the church there are graves of five military leaders from Murom, who died during the capture of Kazan.
According to the third version, the temple was named in honor of the blacksmith brothers.
Savior's Cathedral of the Transfiguration Monastery
The Savior Cathedral of the Transfiguration Monastery is located in the city of Murom and is a three-absid five-domed temple, an architectural monument of the XVI century. It is part of the ensemble of the men’s monastery of the Murom diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church, on the left bank of the Oka River.
The cathedral was erected by order of Ivan the Terrible, in memory of the victory over Kazan, on the site of a wooden church. It is believed that construction began in the 1560s. The building from the outside looks underline monumental, and five bulbous chapters are installed on wide "drums" with narrow windows illuminating the inside of the temple. The cathedral is distinguished by strict simplicity, severity, modest ornamentation.
The interior inside the temple is dominated by the power of undivided walls and square pillars, smoothly flowing into heavy vaults. The building of the cathedral was slightly changed after in 1839, according to the project of the architect Y. Petrov, a refectory, covered wide papert was added to it from the west side, window openings were enlarged. Significant restructurings were carried out during the restoration of the Spasska Cathedral in 1885.
In the 1990s, the restorers, if possible, returned their original image to the unique monument, but some reconstructions bearing the imprint of past eras were preserved, without destroying its integral image.
Murom City Theatre
In 2022, the Palace of Culture named after the 1100th anniversary of Murom was renamed the Murom State Theatre.
In 1944, the building of the drama theater burned down, and in its place in 1962, the Palace of Culture was opened.
The author of the architectural project is Honored Architect of the USSR N.P. Kurennoy. The famous luxurious palace chandelier was made by special order from non-ferrous metals and crystal (the city of Gus-Khrustalny).
