Church of the Holy Virgin Petrychka
Asenova Krepost Historical Site, Asenovgrad, Bulgaria
Description:
The Church of St. Petrychka is located on the territory of the famous fortress of the city of Asenovgrad and is a beautiful example of Bulgarian architecture of the Middle Ages.
The temple was built during the reign of Tsar Ivan Asen II, who not only expanded and strengthened the fortress built before the XI century, but also decided to build a church on its territory.
Unfortunately, after the capture of Bulgaria by the Ottoman Empire, the fortress itself was completely destroyed. The church is the only structure that has survived and survived to this day, and in fact in its original form.
The temple was restored in 1991.
The Church of St. Petrychka currently functions as an Orthodox church.
