Jumai Mosque

konstantin Irechek street 4, 4000 Plovdiv, Bulgaria

Description:

The Jumai Mosque is the main Muslim temple in the city of Plovdiv, Bulgaria. It was erected in the city center on the site of the former Cathedral of St. Petka Tarnovskaya, immediately after Plodiv was conquered by the Turks in 1364. During the reign of Sultan Murad II, the old building of the mosque was destroyed, and in its place the Main Friday Mosque - the current building of Ulu Jumaya - was erected.

Inside the quadrangular structure there is a huge hall, the width of which is 33 meters, and the height is 27 meters. In the construction of the building, one can observe the reflection of the ancient Bulgarian architecture technique: a series of hewn stone goes through every two rows of bricks. Jumaya has nine domes covered with lead plates. In the north-eastern part of the main facade there is a minaret: on the snow-white background of sand plaster you can see a wonderful ornamental pattern - a network of small squares made of red brick. The interior of the mosque is decorated with a delightful wall painting consisting of stylized compositions – garlands, flowers and branches that frame wall medallions with various quotes from the Koran.
