Walking tour of Sofia with a visit to Boyana Church - guide Mariana Vasileva
Description:
Imagine that we are standing on the highest point of Sofia ... basin - 550 meters above sea level. Here, on this place, we find the highest level of history of the city – the Orthodox Church, which gave its name to the city of Sofia. This place was located outside the fortress walls of the then Roman city of Serdica, named after its first inhabitants - the Thracian tribe of Serds. The site was part of a large Roman theater in the second century AD - here somewhere begins the history of this emblematic temple. On the site where the first martyrs for Christ tortured and killed a small cemetery church appeared somewhere between the 2nd and 3rd century AD.
There are many churches called the Wisdom of God – in Greek – Sofia, but probably only one city in the world that took the name of its main temple – the name of the Wisdom of God – is the Bulgarian capital Sofia.
Proclaimed the capital of Bulgaria in 1879, after liberation from the 5th century Ottoman slavery, since then Sofia has grown more than 10 times and now has more than 1.2 million inhabitants and all the signs of rapid growth – European architecture from the late 19th and early 20th century and extensive panel residential complexes of the socialist era. But the heart of this “Always growing and never aging” city, according to the motto on its coat of arms, did not cease to beat here in its central part near the church of Hagia Sophia and hot mineral springs. The center of one of the oldest European cities has not changed its place for more than 20 centuries. Therefore, a walking tour of the center of Sofia for 3-4 hours will take you through the centuries of wonderful history of Europe, Byzantium, Bulgaria and meet you with monuments of so different eras in the same place. Welcome to the walking tour of Sofia.
