Kaliakra - Yailata

Description:

Cape Kaliakra is one of the most picturesque places on the coast of northern Bulgaria. Here natural beauty is combined with archaeological antiquities. The majestic rocks descend almost vertically into the sea, and from a height all the surrounding beauty – natural and man-made – opens up. It is no coincidence that there has been a settlement here since ancient times - this place was very convenient from the point of view of inaccessibility for enemies. And at the end of the XIV century, Kaliakra became one of the Bulgarian capitals: during the reign of the despot Dobrotitsa and his son Ivanko, it was the main city of the Dobrudzhan despotism. We will see the remains of an ancient fortress, ancient churches and, of course, the cape itself.

Yailat is also a very picturesque place, once inhabited by people. The settlement existed here until the middle of the XI century. The ecotrope leading through this small and rare steppe for Bulgaria will lead us in the footsteps of past eras. We will pass through an ancient sanctuary, cave dwellings, the remains of a late antique fortress, a rock church. And, of course, we will admire the colorful nature of Bulgarian Dobruja. A walk is recommended for lovers of trekking on rough terrain.
