Varna

Provadia - Ovech fortress

Description:

Provadia is a small town in the Varna region, but has no less ancient history than Varna. Here is the largest deposit of rock salt in Bulgaria. Today there is a salt plant on it, and it began to be developed in ancient times - back in the VI millennium BC, a settlement was founded here, whose residents mined salt and actively traded it.

Now it is considered by archaeologists the oldest urban settlement in Europe. Later, Thracians, Greeks, Romans, Bulgarians lived here...

The fortress on high cliffs was an important strategic point until the end of the XVII century. During the Liberation of Bulgaria, the multi-ethnic population of Provadia did everything to save their city from destruction – and they succeeded.

We will walk along the Provadian plateau, which rises picturesquely above the city, visit the remains of the Ovech fortress and cave monasteries. The trip allows you to touch the Bulgarian Middle Ages, as well as enjoy the unique views that open from the plateau to the city and its surroundings.
