Varna

The Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God

square of Saints Cyril and Methodius, 2, Varna, Bulgaria

Description:

The Great Cathedral of the Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God looks contradictory. On the one hand, shining with golden bulbs of the domes, it is elegant and majestic, on the other, this massive and heavy architecture resembles the walls of the castle. It was erected at the end of the 19th century in honor of the declaration of independence from Turkish rule.

The architect of the cathedral was Odessa Ivan Maas, and the dedication to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin was received in honor of the Russian Empress Maria Alexandrovna, who was the aunt of the Bulgarian Prince Alexander I Batenberg. Interestingly, the walls of the building were built from stones that formed the former Turkish fortress walls around Varna.

The cathedral is considered one of the symbols of Varna. Inside you can see frescoes of modern work of the mid-20th century. Very good colored stained glass and carved throne of the Archbishop.
