Copenhagen

The oldest monarchy in the world

Description:

Today we are waiting for a journey of 800 years during which you will learn how a small fishing village in the 12th century turned into a powerful power, which at the end of the 14th century united all the Scandinavian countries, why it was here that Bishop Absalon decided to build a palace - a fortress that after 600 years turned into Kristiansborg Castle, which was so envied by the Hanseatic Union that he decided to capture the fortress of Absalon at any cost and "destroy without leaving a stone", why the Danes are considered the founders of the Estonian capital Tallinn, as well as why the sculpture of the father of the Danish constitution, Frederik Kristiansborg, standing in front of the 7-year-old castle. Danish history is full of legends and on the example of Christiansborg Castle we will get acquainted with many of these fascinating stories.

Copenhagen is a city of contrasts, so it’s no surprise that the Danish kingdom has a democracy on one side and the world’s oldest monarchy on the other, as the reigning Queen Margaret 2 can trace her ancestry back 1,000 years. Let’s look at how these mutually exclusive concepts can exist in Danish society. During the tour, we will talk about the royal family and the powers of the Queen, about the political structure of the Danish kingdom. We are waiting for legends of the Danish past and the history of the present, we will remember the history of Danish-Russian relations, dating back more than 400 years, we will visit the hall of Alexander the Great, in the tower and throne rooms, as well as in the royal library and the hall of royal receptions, where the Queen arranges a New Year banquet for foreign ambassadors and invited guests. Here, we will see a series of 17 tapestries, the manufacture of which took 10 years, and was spent more than 120 million Danish crowns.

I will tell you how the Absalon fortress became the political center of the Danish kingdom and then we will see the ruins of this fortress, which are carefully preserved in the basements of Christiansborg Castle. It seems that the very spirit of the time hovers over these huge boulders, and if you listen carefully, you can hear a distant echo of ancient battles, which these stones have been unwittingly witnessing for many hundreds of years.

After our tour, you can climb the tower of Christiansborg Castle, where from a height of 106 meters you will enjoy the views of the historic part of Copenhagen. Also, I suggest you plan an independent visit to the Royal Carriage Museum, the Royal Stable, the Arsenal War Museum, Christiansborg Church and the Thorvaldsen Sculpture Museum, which are located a few steps from Christiansborg.

Important: Christiansborg Castle is not a museum, but the working residence of Queen Margaret 2nd; the place where the Danish Parliament meets, so the time of the tour must be coordinated, as Christiansborg Castle is not always accessible.

Anyone who wants to know what modern Denmark looks like, lovers of ancient and modern architecture, connoisseurs of history and beautiful cityscapes.
