Castle Island – the political center of Denmark
Description:
Welcome to the center of the political and economic life of the Kingdom of Denmark - the island of Slotsholmen (or Castle Island), which the Danes call the island of power. Slotsholmen is small (only 21 hectares), but incredibly important for the history and politics of Denmark. The history of Denmark has been and is being made here.
It is the cradle of Copenhagen. More than eight centuries ago, a fortress was built on this island at the behest of Bishop Absalon to protect the coast from sea robbers, which formed the basis of the power of the future capital of Denmark. The ruins of the first fortress you will see, descending into the quiet damp cellars - Palace ruins.
Today there is one of the most elegant buildings in Copenhagen - the Stock Exchange building - and one of the most majestic - the Christiansborg Palace. The laconic shape of the palace tells us that we are no longer a royal residence, but a functional government center: the Parliament (folketing), the Prime Minister’s Office, the Supreme Court and the Royal Reception Rooms, which the Queen uses during state receptions and official festivities. Visiting these pompously furnished rooms, you can learn many interesting facts about the “Danish crown”. And 17 tapestries by the artist Björn Nergård tell about Danish history in a modern interpretation. Order a tour
