Stork Fountain
The fountain is installed in Amargertorv Square, Copenhagen, Denmark
Description:
The Stork Fountain appeared in Copenhagen relatively recently - it was installed on Amagertorv Square in 1894. On the occasion of the silver wedding of Crown Prince Frederick VIII and Princess Louise, a competition for the best project was organized, in which architects Wilhelm Bissen and Edward Petersen won. According to their plan, three sculptures of birds were to be installed under the bowl of the fountain, ready to fly in different directions. Inside the pool itself you can see stone figures of frogs and lotus flowers.
The installation of the fountain was postponed for a long time to guess the anniversary date. After the installation of bronze sculptures, for almost a hundred years, the debate continues, how exactly to call the fountain. Some believe that the sculptures do not depict storks, but herons, and the fountain should be renamed. In 2008, the city officially asked representatives of the Danish Ornithological Society to determine the species of birds. They made the indisputable conclusion that it was storks, and since then the fountain bears their name.
Since 1950, one can observe an unusual action, which is arranged by graduates of the obstetric department of the local Medical Institute. Every year they stage dances around the Storks Fountain, marking the successful defense of diplomas.
