Amagertorv Square
Description:
Amager Square in Copenhagen is often referred to as the city center, although in fact the central square is located near the city hall. Amager is considered one of the oldest places in Copenhagen. The square was designed at the beginning of the XVI century, getting its name thanks to farmers from the Amager district, who sold their products here. In addition, it was customary to arrange knightly tournaments and fights, which still remember the old pavement.
Today, Amager Square is one of the busiest pedestrian spots in Copenhagen, always filled with tourists. In the southern part of the square is the Christiansborg Palace and the luxurious building of the famous Royal Copenhagen manufactory, decorated in the Renaissance style. Also on Amager Square you can visit the royal porcelain shop and the exhibition hall of Georg Jensen with his famous silverware.
In the center of the square is a popular among tourists fountain "Storks", squatting on the edge of which, twice a day you can watch the changing of the guard at the royal palace, during which the guards march across the square.
