Gammeltorv Square

The square is located at the intersection of streets Stroget, Norregade, Skindergade and Nytorv Copenhagen, Denmark

Description:

Gammeltor Square is often referred to simply as “Old Square” because it is the oldest place in modern Copenhagen. It existed in the early twelfth century as a place of central market and sale of farm goods from all over the country. But the name and architecture of the Old Square appeared much later, in the XVIII century, after all the buildings were destroyed by the Great Fire of 1795.

Gammeltor Square became famous thanks to the Caritas fountain installed on it. It was given to the city by Christian IV in 1608. Despite its rich decoration with gilded details, for a long time the fountain was used as the main link in the water supply of the city. In 1993, the square was completely restored and repainted with light stone. Today, Gammeltor is one of the busiest places in the center of Copenhagen.
