Christiansborg Castle

Denmark, K benhavn, Prins J rgens Gå rd 1.

Description:

Christiansborg Castle is the residence of the Danish royal family. It is located on the Royal Island of Slotsholmen, separated from the rest of the city by a series of canals.

Christiansborg has more than 800 years of history. Over the years, it burned to the ground four times, but each time it was rebuilt. The last fire occurred in 1884, and after that the building we see today was built. The first stone in its foundation was laid in 1907, and the official date of completion is considered to be January 12, 1928.

Most of the palace premises are now occupied by the Danish Parliament, the Prime Minister of Denmark and the Supreme Court, the other part belongs to the royal family. The palace building was designed by architect Torvald Jorgensen in the neo-baroque style. The main material of the walls is reinforced concrete facade finished with granite. Interestingly, granite stones were collected from all over the country, they were brought even from Greenland. The most impressive element of the architecture of the palace was its tower, 106 meters high – so far in Copenhagen there are no buildings higher. The royal chambers are located on the first and second floors of the castle in its northern part.

The Royal State and Throne Rooms are open to the public when not used by the Queen for official events.
