The Cave Temple of the Prophet Elijah
Sinai Peninsula, South Sinai, Egypt
Description:
On the slope of Horeb on the north side is the church of the prophet Elijah, built in a cave. This is an Orthodox monastery at an altitude of two thousand meters. It owes its appearance to the Georgian King David II. Date of construction 1089-1125 years. The place was chosen not by chance: according to legend, Elijah himself hid here from the persecution of King Ahab of Israel and Queen Jezebel. Near the temple there is a famous well with fresh drinking water, which has healing properties. Around the church are trees and shrubs. Just below the temple are two arches of stone, under which is the chapel of the Virgin. There are two roads to reach. The first is the Ladder of Repentance with 3,100 steps. The second is the Camel Trail, which can be climbed by camels (about three hours).
