Ancient Town Hall
Description:
Tallinn Town Hall was first mentioned in written sources in 1322 as the seat of the government. By 1404 it was rebuilt and has since retained its appearance. In 1530, a weather vane was installed on the tower of the town hall, which the townspeople began to call Old Toomas. Built on the south side of Tallinn’s central square, the town hall has witnessed trade and secular activity for centuries. In the old documents, all the rooms of the first floor were called wine cellars. The largest hall of the first floor, the shopping hall, was probably used as a place to get acquainted with the most valuable consignments of goods. The small room next to the trading hall was a wine cellar. The Burger Hall is the largest and brightest hall, used for mass meetings and receptions and as a courtroom. The greatest artistic treasures are collected in the magistrate's hall, a 14th century wood carving. Now the Town Hall performs one of its old functions - it is a representative building of the city of Tallinn.
