History of the Latin Quarter

Description:

Do you think the Latin Quarter is only in Paris? No way. Between the Tallinn streets of Murevakhe and Vienna is the territory of the former Dominican monastery. The Dominican monks who founded the Monastery of St. Catharines in 1246, not only wrote, but also spoke Latin, which gives every right to call this place that way. The monastery was destroyed in the first quarter of the 16th century, but still some buildings miraculously survived and make a very strong impression with their scale and harsh simplicity. In addition, on the site of the former monastery refectory (dining room) was built in the middle of the 19th century Catholic Church of St. Peter and Paul - the only Catholic church in Tallinn. To this day, most of the sermons and services here are conducted in Latin. But the Latin Quarter is famous not only for its spiritual life, but also for its creative life. After all, it is here that the famous street of Masters Katarina Kaik is located, where you can not only marvel at the skill of our hatters, potters, glass blowers and puppeteers, but also buy their wonderful masterpieces.
