Open Air Museum of Rocca Al Mare

Description:

One of the most wonderful sights of Tallinn! A magnificent place that allows you to imbue yourself with the spirit of the peasant and landlord history of Tallinn and Estonia, accompanied by an accredited guide. You should come to the estate in good weather (preferably in summer) and enjoy communicating with nature and antiquity.

In 1863, the successful Tallinn industrialist Arthur Girard de Sucaton, in love with Italy, bought a picturesque plot on the western shore of the Gulf of Copli; from which there is a beautiful view of Tallinn and called it Rocca al-Mare, which means “Rock by the Sea” in Italian. He built a manor there and built a park on the surrounding 20 hectares.

After 101 years, in 1964, an open-air museum began to work on the territory of this summer estate. The museum now covers an area of 79 hectares. Its territory is divided into 4 parts, according to the historical and ethnographic division of Estonia. The museum contains more than 45 thousand exhibits related to the life of Estonian farms from the 18th to the 20th century. Here from different parts of Estonia were brought peasant houses-riga with all farm buildings: barns, water and windmills, workshops, forge. During the tour you and your guide will visit these buildings. In the chapel from the settlement of Estonian Swedes, built in the 17th century, services are still held.

During the tour, the guide will introduce you to the life of Estonian peasants in different regions of Estonia. The guide will show you a rural school of the late 19th century, you can sit at the desk in the classroom with a portrait of Nicholas 2 on the wall, and then go to the roadside tavern, built in 1840 and try dishes of national cuisine. There are exhibitions and sales of folk crafts, horse riding, festivities during folk holidays with picturesque dances in folk costumes.
