Tallinn – a fashionable resort of the early 19th century
Description:
In the early 19th century, Tallinn was known as a fashionable resort, where people came to relax on the seaside or improve their health on the "Revel waters". The center of resort life was Kadriorg, where in the park and its surroundings there were water hospitals, sanatoriums, salons and hotels. The key to the attractiveness of Kadriorg was the increased interest of the royal family to the local imperial palace, which was built by order of Peter 1 for Empress Catherine 1 in the first half of the 18th century. On the territory of the park there is still a monument "Mermaid", dedicated to the memory of the sunken ship, the house of Peter 1 and the Singing Field, where every 5 years the Song and Dance Festivals are held - one of the most significant events in the cultural life of Estonia.
