Monument to the Governor of Turku Peru Brahe

Akatemiankatu, Turku, Finland

Description:

The monument to the governor of Turku Peru Brahe, located in the Finnish city of Turku, is dedicated to a man who in 1637 came to the city as governor and began to deal with its construction and development. Per Brahe founded the Abo Academy in 1640, the country’s first public university. In 1888, a monument dedicated to him was erected in the city, near the Academy and the Cathedral.

On a high figure pedestal you can see a bronze sculpture of the governor, who looks into the distance. Peru Brahe is dressed in a medieval costume, in his hand a sword, his right leg exposed forward. On the pedestal there is an inscription in Finnish that reads: "I was happy with the country and the country was happy with me."
