Turku Market Square

Universitetsgatan 19, 20100 & Aring bo, Finland

Description:

Initially, the master plan of the city of Turku, which was developed in 1828 by architect Carl Ludwig Engel, planned the construction of eight squares in the city as multifunctional structures that perform a fire-fighting function. However, only half of this project has been implemented. And one of the implemented ideas was the Shopping Square, which turned into a new important public center.

Over time, the Orthodox Church and the Swedish Theatre were erected on the square, which forever determined the nature of the Turku Trade Square. In the 19th century, the square began to be decorated with residential houses with shops, which were distinguished by lush neo-Renaissance facades, but in 1960 the houses were demolished and rebuilt - now in the style of Finnish functional architecture.

Now the Market Square is a popular place for trade and meetings of citizens, as well as an important tourist attraction.

Buses come here from all parts of the city, there are such important shopping centers as Hansa and Wiklund. The square also houses the Hamburger Bors Hotel, the Swedish Turku Theatre and the Orthodox Church of St. Alexandra.
