Cultarant's Castle

Kordelininkatu 1, 21100 Naantali, Finland

Description:

Kultaranta is the summer residence of the President of Finland. It is located on the rock of one of the islands of the Turku Archipelago, with access to the Finnish Gulf, near the resort town of Naantali. Cultaranta in Finnish means “Golden Coast”.

The history of this castle is also interesting. It was built in 1916 by architect L. Sonka for one of the richest people in Finland, Alfred Cordely. A magnificent ensemble was created in the style of Finnish romanticism. On the rocky cliff of the island of Luonnonmaa, a building overlooking the strait is located, surrounding it with a magnificent park where thousands of roses bloom. After the death of Alfred Cordeli, the Cultarant estate was transferred to the state. That was in 1922. The then government decided to use it as the summer residence of the President.

There are now 19 rooms in the castle. In 1929, a major overhaul was carried out in the interior, as a result of which the vaulted ceiling, made in the form of a starry sky, in the golden living room was rebuilt into a flat one. On the lower floor there are residential and festive premises, and on the upper floor there are places for guests. To the tower, from where you can see the entire park, lead marble steps. Unfortunately, the situation did not survive, most of it was sold at auction.
