Independent travel and view of the city of Egisheim!

History of Egisheim

Egisheim is a small town in Alsace (modern Upper Rhine department, northeastern France), located among vineyards at the foot of the Vosges. Despite its compact size, it has a rich history, rooted in antiquity and closely related to feudal Europe, Christianity and the culture of the Rhine Valley.

Ancient times and antiquity

Archaeological finds around Egisheim show that the area was inhabited already in Neolithic times. In the vicinity found stone tools, remains of sites and objects of Celtic culture.

Later, the Romans came to the region:

  • I century BC. - V century AD: Alsace was part of the Roman provinces of Germania Superior and later Germania Prima.

  • In the vicinity of Egisheim there were roads connecting important Roman centers – Columbarium and Basilia.

  • There are supposed to be small villas and farmsteads engaged in viticulture, a tradition inherited and strengthened in the Middle Ages.

Early Middle Ages (V-X centuries)

After the fall of Rome, the region came under the control of Germanic tribes.

  • Alemanns first.

  • Then the Franks, after the victorious campaigns of Clovis I at the end of the fifth century.

Egisheim was a group of settlements around a strategically important hill. The dynasties of the local counts of Egisheim and Dagsburg began to form at this time.

The birth of Egisheim as a feudal center (X-XI centuries)

The real development of the city is associated with the family of Egisheim-Dagsburg, one of the most influential feudal houses of Alsace.

Castle construction

Around 1000–1020, the counts of Egisheim erected a circular fortified castle, a characteristic form that became a corporate element of the city center. The castle is still visible today due to its concentric streets.

Most famous historical figure: Pope Leo IX

In Egisheim in 1002 was born Bruno von Egisheim-Dagsburg, the future Pope Leo IX (1049-1054), one of the key reformers of the Catholic Church:

  • fighter against simony and moral corruption of the clergy;

  • member of the Clunian reform movement;

  • the initiator of church councils;

  • He was later recognized as a saint.

His birth and activities greatly influenced the spiritual significance of the city.

The Middle Ages and the Age of Conflict (XII-XV centuries)

Egisheim experienced numerous upheavals reflecting the instability of the region between France and German lands.

Main events of the period:

  • XII-XIII centuries - the city is strengthened, around the castle formed a ring layout of narrow streets (typical so far).

  • Feudal feuds between the counts of Aegisheim, the abbeys and the neighbouring lordies.

  • 1347–1349 – Plague epidemic that affected most of Alsace.

  • XV century - a period of wars between the imperial cities, knighthood and gangs of mercenaries (army Armagnacs, "jaqueria"); there are destructions and arson suburbs.

The flowering of the city in the New Time (XVI-XVIII centuries)

Despite the wars, the wine trade became the backbone of Egisheim's economy.

Features of the era:

  • Egisheim is transformed into a wine center specializing in Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Pino Grie.

  • The fortifications gradually lose their military importance and become part of civilian development.

  • During the Reformation, some of the inhabitants became Protestants, as did a large part of Alsace; however, Catholic traditions are preserved thanks to links with the legacy of Leo IX.

Transitions of power: French-German border knot (XVIII-XX centuries)

Alsace is a region with a difficult fate. Egisheim passed from one power to another:

  1. 1648 - Alsace passes to France after the Peace of Westphalia, but retains its Germanic traditions.

  2. 1871 – After the Franco-Prussian War, the region ceded to the German Empire.

  3. 1918 – Returns to France after World War I.

  4. 1940–1945 – incorporated by the Third Reich; returned to France after World War II

These transitions left in Egisheim a unique blend of German and French architecture, dialect and culture.

Modern Egisheim (XX-XXI centuries)

After the 1950s, the city was actively restored. Its unique concentric layout and well-preserved half-timbered houses make it one of the most beautiful cities in France.

Modern milestones:

  • 1970-2000s: The historic center is completely renovated.

  • In 2003, Aegisheim was awarded the title of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France.

  • 2013: Named "French Village" (Village préféré des Français).

  • Tourism, winemaking and handicrafts became the basis of the economy.
