Independent tourism and recreation in the city of Evian-les-Bains Historical information about the city of Evi...
First settlements
The territory of modern Evian was inhabited in ancient times. Archaeological finds indicate that on the shores of Lake Geneva people lived in the Bronze Age and the Iron Age. Later, Celtic tribes came here, engaged in fishing, agriculture and trade.
After the Roman conquest of Gaul, the region became part of the Roman Empire. Due to its convenient location on the shore of the lake, there were trade routes between the Alps, the territory of modern France and Switzerland. Although Evian was not yet a large settlement in the Roman era, the local natural springs were already known to the inhabitants of the region.
Medieval period
After the fall of the Roman Empire, the territory repeatedly came under the rule of various rulers. In the early Middle Ages, the settlement was part of the Kingdom of Burgundy, and later became part of the possessions of the House of Savoy.
The first written mention of the settlement dates back to the XII century. Then Evian was a small fishing village with a pier on the shores of Lake Geneva.
Due to its favorable location, the city gradually became an important trading point. They were transporting across the lake:
wood;
wine;
salt
grain;
tissues;
handicrafts.
For several centuries Evian was ruled by the Dukes of Savoy, who strengthened its economic importance.
As part of the Duchy of Savoy
In the XV-XVIII centuries, the city continued to develop as a small commercial and port center. Churches, houses, warehouses and piers were built here.
The main activities of local residents were:
fishing;
viticulture;
agriculture;
Trade through Lake Geneva.
The life of the city remained calm until the end of the XVIII century, when an event occurred that completely changed its fate.
Discovery of famous mineral springs
In 1789, the French nobleman Marquis de Lessert, walking near the city, tasted water from a local spring belonging to the Cachat family. According to legend, he noticed an improvement in his health after regularly drinking this water. This event attracted the attention of doctors and scientists, who began to study the properties of local sources.
At the beginning of the XIX century, the first scientific studies were carried out, confirming the high quality and unique mineral composition of water. After that, Evian quickly became known as a promising medical resort.
The birth of a thermal resort
In the early XIX century, entrepreneurs began to actively develop the city.
Major developments during this period:
construction of the first baths;
opening of medical institutions;
