Historical information about the city of Menton

Ancient times and the Middle Ages

The region around Menton has been inhabited since very early times. In particular, there is information about the presence of people of the Upper Paleolithic and Neanderthal times.

In the ancient Roman era, the Via Julia Augusta road passed through this area, connecting Placence (modern Piacenza) with Aral (modern Arles).

In the Middle Ages, about XI-XIII centuries, on the site of the present city there were settlements. The first large castle was built by a count from the Ventimiglia family on the hill of Pepin ("Podium Pinum"), which is far from the present center, but laid the foundation for the future settlement.

In documents, the city is mentioned from July 21, 1262 in the treaty between Charles of Anjou and Genoa.

The Dominance of Genoa and Grimaldi

In the XIII-XIV centuries Menton is included in the sphere of influence of the Genoese Republic.

In 1346 it came under the rule of the Principality of Monte Carlo (Monegasque), namely the Grimaldi family.

From then until the nineteenth century, Menton was closely associated with the Principate of Monaco.

XIX Century: From Principality to France

In the first half of the XIX century, Menton still had a special status: after the Napoleonic Wars and the decisions of the Congress of Vienna, the city was temporarily under the protection of the Kingdom of Savoy (Kingdom of Sardinia).

In 1860, as a result of a plebiscite and diplomatic agreements, Menton (along with the bowl of Nice) finally passed to France.

From this moment, a new era begins: thanks to its mild climate, Menton becomes a popular winter resort.

Belle Époque and growth as a resort

The late XIX - early XX centuries were marked by the rapid growth of the city as a winter resort. Cars, railways, rich guests from the UK and Russia - all this leads to the construction of villas, skyscrapers-hotels, luxury hotels.

Especially marked period of Belle Époque: architecture, gardens, decoration of the promenade - everything suggests that Menton became a "social" resort for the upper strata.

XX century and war

During World War II, Menton experienced a difficult time: in June 1940, Italian troops captured the city as part of Italy's invasion of France.

After the war, the city again developed as a resort and tourist destination. The original buildings were restored, new facilities and infrastructure appeared.

Modernity

Today, Menton is a compact town on the French part of the Cote d'Azur, near the border with Italy. It is known for its exceptional climate (mild winter, many sunny days) and special atmosphere: a combination of French and Italian cultures.

It also stands out as the "city of lemons" - thanks to the cultivation of citrus fruits, especially lemons. It is one of the tourist symbols of the city.
