Ancient period
The city of Rustavi (Georgian омמом) is located in the Kvemo Kartli region, on the left bank of the Mtkvari River (Kura), about 25 km from the capital - Tbilisi. The history of Rustavi has more than one and a half thousand years. The first settlements in its place arose in the ancient era, and archaeological excavations indicate the existence of a developed settlement here already in the IV-III centuries BC.
early-feudal
In the early Middle Ages (approximately VI-VIII centuries) Rustavi was one of the important centers of Kartli (Iberia). According to the chronicles, Rustavi was a fortified city that played a strategic role in protecting the approaches to Tbilisi and the southeastern borders of the country. Some historians associate Rustavi with the name of Shota Rustaveli, the great Georgian poet, author of the epic “The Knight in Tiger’s Skin”. Although there is no reliable data on its origin from Rustavi, the similarity of the names sometimes causes an interesting association.
Destruction and desolation
In the XIII century, during the invasion of the Mongol Tatars, Rustavi was destroyed to the ground and practically ceased to exist as a city. For several centuries, the place remained deserted, representing only the ruins of an ancient settlement.
Revival in the XX century: Soviet industrial project
Modern Rustavi was revived in the XX century, but in a completely different form - as the industrial center of Soviet Georgia.
After World War II, as part of post-war reconstruction and industrialization, the Soviet leadership decided to build a new city here, which was to become the heart of the metallurgical industry of Transcaucasia.
Main stages:
In 1944, it was decided to build the Rustav Metallurgical Plant.
In 1948, the construction of a new city began. This year is considered the official date of foundation of modern Rustavi.
In a short time, modern infrastructure, residential areas, roads, schools and hospitals were created.
The 1950s-1960s were a period of rapid growth: heavy industry enterprises, chemical and construction plants were built, cultural institutions were opened.
Revival in the XX century: Soviet industrial project
Rustavi became a typical example of a Soviet-style planned industrial city. It is divided into two large districts:
Old Rustavi is the first part, built in the 1940s-50s, with architecture in Stalinist style.
New Rustavi is a district of the 1960s-80s, with typical panel buildings and industrial zones.
The city was distinguished by its multinational population – workers from different republics of the USSR came here, including Russians, Armenians, Azerbaijanis and Ukrainians.
Period after the collapse of the USSR
After the collapse of the Soviet Union (1991), Rustavi, like many industrial cities in the post-Soviet space, faced a severe economic crisis.
Many factories have stopped or reduced production.
the unemployment rate has risen;
The city’s population declined (many residents emigrated to Tbilisi or abroad).
However, since the 2000s, a gradual recovery process has begun:
Some industrial enterprises were privatized and modernized.
new private companies and car services appeared (one of the largest car markets in the Caucasus is located in Rustavi);
The city has become an attractive sleeping and industrial suburb of Tbilisi.
Modern Rustavi
Today Rustavi is the third largest city in Georgia (after Tbilisi and Kutaisi), with a population of about 120,000-130 thousand people. It remains an important industrial center, but gradually acquires a new face:
housing construction is developing;
New roads, parks and shopping centers appear;
environmental rehabilitation of industrial zones;
Energy efficiency and improvement programs are being actively implemented.
Rustavi is a city of contrasts, where antiquity meets with industrial aesthetics, and Stalin’s harsh facades coexist with green parks, cozy cafes and warm Caucasian hospitality. Located just 25 kilometers from Tbilisi, it is ideal for a day trip or a short trip deep into Georgian history and culture.
History and atmosphere
Rustavi is a city with a double destiny: ancient and modern at the same time. Its roots go back to the era of the Iberian Kingdom, when there was a powerful fortified city that guarded the eastern borders of Georgia. After the destruction by the Mongols, Rustavi disappeared from the map to be reborn 700 years later, as a symbol of the industrial power of the twentieth century.
Today Rustavi is an open-air museum of Soviet modernism, a place where you can see the authentic architecture of the Stalin era, wide avenues, decorative bas-reliefs, arches and colonnades - all this creates a sense of time travel.
