Bajan Ratu Temple

Indonesia, Java Island, East Java Province, Mojokerto County, Trovulan City, Temon Village

Description:

Bajan Ratu Temple is a beautiful architectural monument of the Majapahit Empire, which ruled Indonesia during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The name of the temple is translated as the temple of the Little King, usually due to the fact that the building was built under the maharaja Jayanagara, the second ruler of the empire, who ascended the throne at a young age.

In fact, Bajan Ratu was not originally a temple, but rather a ceremonial gate used in rituals associated with the wires of the dead. Only after Jayanagar’s death did Bajan Ratu become his memorial temple. Bajan Ratu is built of red brick, its steps are made of volcanic pod andesite. The height of the temple is sixteen meters. The temple is richly decorated with bas-reliefs depicting mythical animals, as well as several plots from the Ramayama.

The temple is located in the city of Trovulan on the island of Java - the former center of the capital Majamahit, in the small village of Temon. In 1992, the temple was restored and is now one of the main tourist attractions of the region.
