El-Khazneh Mausoleum

Jordan, Petra

Description:

El-Khazneh is an architectural monument, a mausoleum founded in the II century, which the Arabs call the “Treasury of the Pharaoh”. It is believed that the temple was created before the visit of Emperor Hadrian to Syria.

It is known that at first El-Khazneh was the temple-house of a goddess named Isis. It is believed that the features of the structure, which can now be observed, could create those masters who were familiar with the architectural techniques of Alexandria of Egypt. From the name “El-Khazneh”, according to the popular etymological version, the Russian word “treasury” originated. But there is really no connection between these words. Indeed, El-Khazneh is a “storage”, and the “treasury” is a borrowing in the XII-XIV centuries from the Polovtsian language.

The mausoleum is the embodiment of the skillful work of stone cutters and architects, who without using the necessary tools were able to build a beautiful rock monument.
