Canary Islands

Sightseeing / introductory tour of Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

Description:

In the Canary archipelago, Fuerteventura is the second largest after Tenerife. The island is only 90 km from the coast of Morocco. The length of the coastline is 340 km, mainly the cleanest beaches of white sand.

Winds on Fuerteventura help in the summer to withstand the strongest heat. But there are exceptions. Sometimes these winds blow directly from the Sahara, and that's when they intensify the torment. Or there are not just strong, but very strong winds. Sometimes you do not walk on the beach - the feet are cut with sand almost to the blood.

Nevertheless, the chic kilometer-long beaches and the relative small number of tourists compensate for all the "defects" of Fuerteventura. Pure nature and element!

There are many thickets of aloe, which sometimes reach huge sizes. Maghreb squirrels accompany travelers everywhere, begging for treats. On the coast there are many turtles that lay eggs in the sand.

The landscapes of the island are very unusual, so the film Planet of the Apes was shot here. And a few years ago, an episode of the film “Allies” with Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard starred here.

On Fuerteventura grows the cactus Handia, which is found nowhere else. Fuerteventura is the oldest island in the Canary archipelago. It's about 20 million years old. The ancient island holds many attractions. Among them are the remains of the wall, which once separated from each other the two kingdoms of the Mahorers - the locals of Fuerteventura, the salt museum, where you can buy a whole bag of this white product, as well as many other interesting places.

The capital of modern Fuerteventura is Puerto del Rosario (Puerto del Rosario). It is a natural harbour in the bay on the eastern shore of Fuertaventura. It was formerly known as Puerto de Cabras, and in the 18th century was known as a fishing port and later as a trading port. In 1860 it became the capital of the island, and in 1956 it changed its name to Puerto del Rosario (Port of Rose).

For a reason, the capital was called “Goat Port”, goats here, indeed, are bred in huge numbers. A feature of the local diet is goat cheese, which has gained fame throughout the world. But not only cheese is famous for Fuerteventura, but also goat milk liquor!

Fuerteventura is quite deserted and little populated. Consider the most interesting places on the island.

In fact, there are 3 major tourist centers on Fuerta: in the north, in the center, and in the south.

In the north is Corralejo, here is the Bayuyo volcano, from the top of which opens not only a panorama of Fuerteventura, but also to the neighboring Lobos and Lanzarote Island. As well as white "big beaches" and the most beautiful dunes: Parque Dune de Corralejo, this is the National Park and nature reserve.

In the center is Caleta de Fuste.

In the south are the towns of the Handia Peninsula. Here, by the way, is the highest point of Fuerteventura - Pico de Sarza, whose height is 807 meters.

On the program, here's what I suggest:

1) Start at the center: from Puerto del Rosario, from the port of arrival, head to Caleta de Fuste, to the Museum of Models and Toys, Dreams House Museum. I will love both adults and children! More than 5 thousand exhibits from all countries of the world are collected here. Collection and scale models of cars, aircraft, trains, a huge collection of soldiers, etc. Dollhouses of the early 20th century in miniature and much more!

2) Nice town of Antigua, with a beautiful mill. There are two museums: the Salt Museum, the Sault Museum, and the Cheese Museum, the Museo del Queso Majorero.

(3) Betankuria is the ancient capital of Fuerteventura. It was founded in 1404, almost immediately after the conquest of the island by Jean de Betancourt. It remained the capital until 1834. Betankuria is considered one of the most beautiful villages of the island. The main attraction is the church - Santa Maria. Here you can visit the Museum, Museo de Arte Sacro, an art museum of local creativity and way of life.

There will also be two beautiful observation decks along the way, time for photos!

- observation deck Morro Velosa, where from a 600-meter height offers a beautiful view of the reliefs of Fuerteventura. On the observation deck are statues of the rulers of two kingdoms: Guize and Ayoze, which existed on the island before its conquest. - Observation deck - Mirador Sicasumbre, stunning views of the landscapes of the Island, and crows!

(3) A town with a sweet name for the Russian ear called Ajuy. Notable for its caves. The town is very pretty.

(4) In the south are the towns of the Handia Peninsula, Jandia. Here, by the way, is the highest point of Fuerteventura - Pico de Sarza, whose height is 807 meters. We will pass a pretty place - Morro del Jable, Morro del Jable, with a beautiful white beach! The peninsula of Handia (the southern tip of Fuerteventura) is almost uninhabited, stone placers, a mountain range, an ocean, a lighthouse, a small village of Puerto de La Cruz, behind which the road ends very soon. In this part of the island is the most beautiful place – Coffee. Coffee smoothly passes into Barlovento Beach. The beauty is breathtaking!

If desired, we will visit the cafeteria, an amazing and mystical place! Coffee is also notable for the fact that almost on the beach there is the so-called Casa Winter. During World War II, the Nazi base in the Canary Islands was located here.

Gustav Winter, a German engineer, moved to the Canary Islands in 1925, and was one of 104 German subjects in Spain whose extradition was sought by allies who suspected him of espionage. Usually the villa is closed, open to viewing for organized tourists.

If you move away from history, then it should be mentioned, above Handia, in the south, there is a very beautiful place - a large oasis near the town of La Lajita, it is called "Oasis Park". It's a botanical garden and a zoo!
