Seville Cathedral and Giralda

Description:

The heyday of Seville in the Renaissance was reflected not only in its palaces, squares and commercial grandeur, but also in the main temple of the city - the Cathedral.

“We will build such a large church that our descendants will call us madmen,” according to legend, this is what the church authorities of Seville decided when they began building a new church on the site of the city’s former main mosque. And they kept their promise.

Later, a romantic traveler would say that even Notre-Dame de Paris could walk under the arches of Seville Cathedral with its head held high.

Today, the Cathedral of Seville is considered the largest Gothic temple in the world in terms of internal volume and is included in the Guinness Book of Records. But its greatness is not only in size.

This temple amazes with the elegance of stone carvings, the height of the vaults, the richness of chapels, altars, sculptures and paintings. Inside it resembles a huge box with works of art, where every detail is connected with the history of the city, kings, sailors, religious orders and noble families of Seville.

On the tour, we will see the interior decoration of the cathedral from the point where its scale, beauty and solemn breath of the ancient temple are especially well felt.

You will learn why the oldest icon of the cathedral is revered in Latin America, who owned the numerous chapels, who rests in them and why religious history, royal power, sea discoveries and secular life of Seville are so closely intertwined in the temple.

We will talk about King Alfonso X, about the legends associated with his life, about the famous navigator Christopher Columbus and whether his ashes are really located here.

You will learn why a crocodile is hung under the ceiling of the cathedral, why the bell tower is called the Giralda and how the former minaret of a Muslim mosque became one of the main symbols of Christian Seville.

As part of the tour, we will also climb the Hiralda - the famous bell tower of the cathedral. In medieval Seville it was the highest tower of the city, and today it offers one of the most beautiful views of the historical center.

This tour is suitable for those who want not only to see the main temple of Seville, but to understand its meaning: as a monument of faith, power, art, ambition and the great history of the city.
