Tindari Cathedral
Description:
Black Madonna is the main attraction of the island of Sicily. It was even visited by Pope John Paul II. The image of the Black Madonna, made of dark wood, is in the Tindari Cathedral. Tindari is the last Sicilian colony of the Greeks. It is not surprising that the ancient architecture of the town contains many attractions, one of which is the temple of the Black Madonna.
The statue of the Madonna, created in the eighth century, arrived from Constantinople to Tindari. Local fishermen who found the image gave the statue to the monks. The monks built a small chapel and then a temple in 1549 on the highest point of Cape Tindari – the rock of Maria Nevi. The image of the Black Madonna can be seen on the facade of the temple.
