Padua mystic
Description:
It was not only Saint Anthony who worked miracles. Beautiful images, perfect beauty, still retaining miraculous power. They are almost always hidden in small churches, which are not visited by tourists.
On our tour, we will first visit the Church of St. Tomaso, which houses two identical portraits of St. Philip Neri who repeatedly cried in tears from 1600 to 1700. This unknown Paduan church houses the world’s largest Treasure of the Relics of Saints and Blessed, as well as a transparent, blown glass vessel in the shape of a rose in which blood was collected, which appeared on the Crucifixion of Donatello in 1500, a rich Baroque Altar dedicated to the Virgin (here you should definitely try to count the roses carved on its surface) and two paintings of Mary (1500), a glance in one picture will guide you to the Duomo-main city church, and a glance at another painting indicates the Basilica of St. Anthony.
Another miraculous artifact is the Icon of God in the Cathedral of St. Justina, brought from Constantinople, there were iconoclastic wars and many icons were put to fire. And this icon, according to legend, jumped out of the fire and fell into the hands of a simple woman, who later gave her to St. Urius, who brought her to Padua. In fact, the original icon was damaged by fire. That is why it is carried out on dry days and make a cross procession. Another fact of independent movement in space is when in 1400 it was wanted to restore, but it returned to its former place. It was 100 years before it was restored. But in the Cathedral of St. Justina there were other miracles. In 1200, a clairvoyant established the burial place of Christian martyrs. She set up many candles at this place and they spontaneously lit, it is there now is the Well of the Martyrs, filled with their relics.
From the oval image of the Mother of God in the church of Madonna dei Lumini ai Carmini in 1500 came a shimmering light and according to legend, the worship of this image saved the city from the plague in that era.
In the church of St. Peter the Apostle, a perfect copy of the House of Mary was recreated, which was taken by the Templars from the Holy Land and recreated in Loreto. But the most important thing is not that, the body of the Most Holy Eustokyo is kept here. In the history of the life of this nun, you can shoot a mystical thriller of all time! She was born from an extramarital relationship between the mother of a nun and an aristocrat and from an early childhood the devil settled in her, despite the fact that she lived at the monastery of her mother. Her entire subsequent life was devoted to trying to get rid of this demonic presence, which she did with deep faith. The saint died at a very early age of 25 and was buried. But after a while, her body was exhumed and began to secrete a miraculous fluid. He helped those who believed in him and helped him today. This is the first example of a woman who, despite having a diabolical presence in her, was elevated to the rank of saint by her faith. One of Padua’s most beloved heroes is Blessed Pellegrin. His name was Antonio, which is why he was not made a saint. The Supreme Church authorities decided that Padua could not have two Antonio Saints. This boy left home at the age of ten and began wandering around the holy places of Europe and the Holy Land, devoting himself to fasting and prayer. When he returned home, he was not welcomed by his own family and died very early from poverty and starvation. There are no prophets in their country. But almost immediately on his grave began to occur miraculous cures and numerous miracles. During our walk we can also visit the church that keeps his holy relics. Miraculous are the icons of the Virgin and Child in the Central Cathedral of Padua, painted by the artist Giusto de Menabouoi.
Finally, I would like to add that the oldest Romanesque church that has survived to this day is St. Sophia, which was the Arian Cathedral in the Longobard era. All other existing churches of this period have undergone reconstruction in later times, and Hagia Sophia has retained its original structure. This is a real time machine where we can plunge into the Middle Ages, which was not untouched by time!
