Church of Our Lady

Piazzetta delle Dogane, 90133 Palermo, Italia

Description:

The Church of Our Lady is a church in Palermo, southern Italy. It was built in 1490-1520 by the architect Matteo Carnelivari, and its name comes from the fact that the edge of the chain that closes the entrance to the port of Cala was attached to the wall of the building.

Another legend of the origin of the name tells of a miracle and is associated with the prayer of unjustly condemned prisoners chained to the building standing on this site. The Mother of God heard their prayers and the chains melted in the sun. The news of this quickly spread throughout the city, after which money was collected for the construction of the temple.

The architecture of the church combines elements of several styles: late Renaissance and Gothic Catalan style. The latter is especially noticeable in the three arcades above the loggia located at the top of the stairs. It leads to the portals of the church, decorated with bas-reliefs by Vincenzo and Antonello Gagini.

The space inside is divided into three naves decorated with frescoes by Olivio Sozzi. Here you can see two sarcophagi: one ancient, and the other - XVI century, as well as several paintings of the XVII century.
