Maggione Church

Via Teatro Garibaldi, 2-18, 90133 Palermo, Italy

Description:

Maggione is a church built in honor of the Holy Trinity, located in the eastern district of Palermo. It is considered an example of late Norman architecture. As part of the archdiocese of the city, this church has the honorary status of a “small basilica”.

The temple was built at the expense of a prominent statesman Matteo d'Agello. The date of the foundation of the temple in different sources varies between 1150 and 1190. In 1197 it was transferred to the knights of the Teutonic Order, and from the end of the XV century it became a parish church.

Maggione was significantly damaged during World War II and was rebuilt, but during the restoration numerous Baroque elements were dismantled, making it one of the few examples of Sicilian-Norman architecture.

The facade of the building is a laconic composition of several tiers of deaf arches, without the complex arch weaves characteristic of Palermo. No less strict interior of the church is almost devoid of decorative elements. Only in the northern nave can you observe only a few preserved tombstones of the formerly ruling Teutonics.
