Church of St. John the Hermit

Via dei Benedettini, 16, 90134 Palermo, Italy

Description:

Built in the eleventh century, the Church of St. John the Hermit combines all the bright features of the Arab-Norman architectural style. The church was built on the site of an Arab fortress, which was destroyed by the Normans during the siege of Palermo (the base of the fortress can be seen today). The interiors of the church are decorated with 12th century frescoes. The Normans dedicated a new temple to St. John the Baptist, who according to legend lived his life in a cave located nearby.

The Church of St. John the Hermit surprises with its location. The church building is hidden in a rock, and to get there, you need to walk along a small bridge under which there is a chasm. The bridge itself is the courtyard of the church.
